Q.

Which of the following statements is/are correct about Ocean Currents?

1. Gravitational pull of the Earth is responsible for the activation of Cold currents.

2. The rotation of the Earth stimulates warm currents.

3. The ‘West Wind drift’ is the largest current among all and is a type of circumpolar current.

Select the correct statements using the codes given below:

Explanation:

ANSWER: (D)

All the statements are correct.

Earth’s rotation gives stimulus to warm currents. Centrifugal force due to rotation forces equatorial waters to travel away from the equator as warm surface currents. Gravitation pull of Earth is responsible for the activation of Cold currents because due to gravitational pull of Earth towards its centre polar water develops tendency to move towards equator as cold current.

Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) is an ocean current that flows clockwise from west to east around Antarctica. An alternative name for the ACC is the West Wind Drift. The ACC is the dominant circulation feature of the Southern Ocean and has a mean transport estimated at 100-150 Sverdrups (Sv, million m³/s), or possibly even higher, making it the largest ocean current. The current is circumpolar due to the lack of any landmass connecting with Antarctica and this keeps warm ocean waters away from Antarctica, enabling that continent to maintain its huge ice sheet.
