The UPSC Mains examination is a crucial stage of the Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). It is the second stage of the examination, following the Preliminary examination.
The UPSC Mains examination is designed to assess candidates' comprehensive understanding, analytical ability, and writing skills on diverse subjects. The Mains examination consists of nine papers, out of which two papers are qualifying in nature, while the remaining seven papers are counted for merit.
The nine papers in the UPSC Mains examination are as follows:
Paper-A: One of the Indian languages chosen from the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution (qualifying in nature).
Paper-B: English (qualifying in nature).

Q. 8. (b) The historical causes for the rise of anti-colonial movement in South-East Asia were cultural differences, spread of western education and the emergence of Communist ideas. Discuss.
Q. 8. (c) Arab nationalism was not only a cultural movement, but also an anti-colonial struggle. Comment.
Essay: Candidates are required to write an essay on a given topic.
General Studies-I (GS-I): Covers subjects like Indian Heritage and Culture, History, and Geography of the World and Society.
General Studies-II (GS-II): Topics include Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, and International Relations.
General Studies-III (GS-III): Encompasses Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Environment, Security, and Disaster Management.
General Studies-IV (GS-IV): Deals with Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude.
Each paper in the UPSC Mains examination is of 3 hours duration and carries a total of 250 marks, except for the qualifying papers (Indian languages and English) that are of 300 marks each. The total marks for the Mains examination are 1750, and the personality test (interview) carries 275 marks.
The Mains examination aims to test the depth of knowledge, understanding, and analytical skills of candidates, enabling the UPSC to select individuals with the required intellectual and administrative capabilities for the various prestigious civil services posts in India, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Indian Foreign Service (IFS), among others.
